I think it is safe to say that the TurboGraphx-16 is one of 'those' consoles which has got predominantly a cult following. Hiding in the background of its intimidating peers the SNES and the Mega-Drive, the TurboGraphx-16 plodded along quite happily keeping itself to itself, with a lot of its games not leaping to other platforms. However, in 1995, the TurboGraphx-16's premier 2D platformer Bonk decided to have a change of scenery, appearing in his very own and first SNES game, the aptly named Super Bonk.

Super Bonk as with past games in the Bonk franchise has you taking on the role of Bonk the quirky bald-headed caveman, who after being caught in King Drool's trap must find his way back to prehistoric times. On the way Bonk must overcome and go through city streets, caves and even outer space to eventually return home.

Now if anyone ever played Bonk on the TurboGraphx-16, they will know that Bonk games are extremely quirky, as well as being a surreal albeit humourous experience. Travelling through the digestive systems of dinosaurs, turning into a crazed pterodactyl and climbing up walls by gnawing at them, Bonk is definitely one of those gaming experiences which makes you scratch your head and wonder "who came up with this stuff?"

Gameplay wise, the game plays like an average 2D 16-Bit platformer. The enemies are fun, but can be difficult to kill due to Bonk's somewhat ridiculous headbutt attack, the levels are inventive and the game is challenging which can lead to unneccessary frustation at times. The game has some fun mini-games, but some also can be frustrating. So all in all its a mixed bag.

The game's presentation is colourful and vibrant. The levels all look great and the graphics really shine through well on the SNES, while retaining the TurboGraphix-16 style which made Bonk such a mascot for the system. The music is fun and really adds to the quirky overall experience.

Overall, Super Bonk is an average 16 Bit platfomer for the SNES. The game will never top or even get close to being in anybody's top SNES platformer's list due to its incredible competition, but the game is quirky, as well as being humurous which helps give it a personality at least. The game has been re-released for the Wii's Virtual Console, but if I were you, unless you are a crazy fan of obscure SNES or 16-Bit platformers, I'd let Super Bonk pass you by.
