In 1998, Squaresoft gave the American audience one of the best RPGs of all time. The game almost didn't make it to the states due to its controversial religious themes. Good thing they decided to release it here, because this game has one of, if not the best story ever seen in a console RPG. The plot and characters are incredibly deep, and the game covers a wide range of topics. Most of the topics covered in the game can't even be discussed in a review for spoiler reasons.
Xenogears is one of the few RPGs to feature multiple battle systems. There are standard character fights, and you can also use giant humanoid machines called Gears. The Gear battles were quite strategic, since you had to worry about fuel consumption.
Unfortunately, this game was released during the same holiday season as Metal Gear Solid and Ocarina Of Time, and a ton of other big Playstation games. Xenogears obviously did not have spectacular sales that season, but would eventually get a Greatest Hits release.
Anyone looking for a lengthy retro RPG adventure should check this one out. It is a bit pricey, but worth every penny and more.
