It's a shame that the Lynx is often ridiculed when put up against the Game Gear and Game Boy, as it truly has some superb titles available for it.

Xybots, like Xenophobe, is a another classic example of a fun (if not amazing) coin-op that along with the likes of Toki, S.T.U.N. Runner, Ms Pac-Man and several other titles, received an excellent Lynx conversion.

Effectively Gauntlet in a maze (in fact Xybots was originally going to be Gauntlet 3) you have to move around the tightly packed corridors blasting robots, avoiding enemy fire and picking up as many goodies as possible.

Like many Lynx games, the comlinx can be used to get that proper two-player arcade experience, but it's the controls that really impress here.

As with Xenophobe, the originally machine was fairly cumbersome to use, but the Lynx has no such problems. One button is used to fire, while holding down the other and pressing left or right rotates your character. It works extremely well, and never feels a chore to use.

Complete a level (either by finding the exit or simply clearing a stage of robots) and you'll have a brief respite (where you can buy a few extra goodies) before once again heading off into the fray.

Fast and furious, Xybots is a superb arcade conversion that plays like a charm. If you're a fan of the arcade original, or just enjoy a good blaster, then this should definately be purchased.
