Noob Saibot

Ed Boon and John Tobias were so happy with themselves that they decided to create a character in their Mortal Kombat universe using their names (in reverse). Noob Saibot (yes, Noob. Now a term for newbie game players, get over it) debuted in 1993’s Mortal Kombat 2 as a mysterious hidden character. A shadow, completely pitch black with no features, Noob Saibot was 100% mystery from his debut.

What I like so much about this character is his backstory and further revelations. We never knew who Noob Saibot was. Years passed as did Mortal Kombat sequels featuring this character, and we were none the wiser.

Noob Saibot

Mortal Kombat Deception, released in 2004 (11 years after Noob’s debut), finally fleshed out details on who exactly this character is. To the surprise of many Kombat fans, Noob Saibot is actually the original Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat 1. The revelation that a main character who we thought had died was on the roster all along was mind blowing.

As the story goes (and not to go fully in-depth), Scorpion killed the original Sub-Zero (real name Bi-Han) in the first Mortal Kombat tournament. In the second and third tournament, you play as Sub-Zero’s younger brother Kuai Liang (who takes on Sub-Zero’s name in his honor). In the second Mortal Kombat tournament, the new Sub-Zero is sent by his Lin-Kuei superiors to finish the job his older brother failed to do (kill Shang Tsung). In the Third tournament, the new Sub-Zero leaves the Lin-Kuei and is now a “good guy”.

All while this was going on (and for sequels afterwards), the original Sub-Zero was there, reincarnated as an evil wraith. Noob Saibot has now lost everything that once made him human, such as pride and compassion. He is now, simply, an ass kicker.

Noob Saibot

I find it awesome that the MK creators decided to hold off on this information for so long. Noob has the distinction on being the only character to appear in the first 7 Mortal Kombat games (in one form or the other). Even if they pulled it out of nowhere and had no intention of fleshing out Noob Saibot, the revelation that he was once one of the original main characters is great.

When discovering this information regarding Noob, this makes you want to use the character more for pure nostalgia reasons (even if his move set his now completely different). Later down the line we also found out that the character is actually Noob and his villainous shadow is Saibot. The recent Mortal Kombat reboot even has some moves where Saibot will hold the opponent while Noob lays the smackdown.
