A lot of people may be surprised by my love for Waluigi, as he has not been given the best reception by fans of the Mario franchise. His gimmicky personality, ugly looks and random debut have cast a sad shadow over his inclusion in Mario games, which I think is sad. Because for me, Waluigi is the man.
When Waluigi first appeared in “Mario Tennis” back on the N64, I was intrigued. I asked myself “who is this guy? And where did he come from?” so I began playing as him and ever since then, I have always had a soft spot for his skinny frame, silly walk and purple overalls.
There is just something reminiscent of a Shakespearean tragic hero about Waluigi. He is the Mario franchise’s true underdog. He will never get his own game, never be universally loved and never make it past cameo appearances in secondary Mario titles.
Yet, I always feel compelled to play as him, and I have become almost a defender of his inclusion in Mario titles. We have Wario, so why not Waluigi?
So the next time you turn on your copy of Mario Party 5, or have a few games on Mario Tennis, why not give Waluigi a chance? I did and I have never looked back. Long live Waluigi!
